Quarter load versus rated load, the trick in every spec sheet
Almost every generator noise rating you will ever see was measured at quarter load, the engine loping along at 25% of rated output with the smart throttle pulled back. That is the number on the box because it is the best number the unit can produce.
It is not the number you camp with. Plug in a converter charging a depleted battery bank, or start an air conditioner, and the engine speeds up. Honda is the only maker in this group that publishes both ends of the curve, and its spread is instructive: the EU2200i goes from 48 dBA at quarter load to 57 dBA at rated load, and the EU3200i from 54 to 58. Nine extra dB is not a rounding error; every 10 dB reads to the ear as roughly a doubling of loudness. Every other unit here has a spread like that too. The makers just do not print it.
The other spec-sheet trap is distance. Sound falls off as you move away, so "53 dBA" means nothing comparable without knowing where the meter stood. Champion is the only maker here that states it: 53 dBA at 23 ft for the 2500, 61 dBA at 23 ft for the 4500. Honda, Yamaha, and Westinghouse publish no distance. So treat the cross-brand table below as a rough map, not a lab result.
What the published numbers say
Within those limits, the field sorts cleanly. Honda's two units post the lowest figures and the only full-load numbers. The Westinghouse iGen2550 claims "as low as 52 dBA at 25% load", the hedged phrasing is Westinghouse's own. Champion's 53 dBA at 23 ft is the most honestly stated claim in the class. The Yamaha EF2200iS trails at 57 to 65 dBA across its load range, the highest published figures here, from a product line that Yamaha appears to be quietly winding down.

One structural point: smaller generators are quieter, but a small generator working hard is louder than a big one loafing. If your real load is 1,500W continuous, a 2200-class unit runs near rated load, at the top of its noise curve, while a 3000-class unit covers it at the bottom of its curve. Quiet is about the gap between your load and the rating, not just the rating. Size the load first.
Generac: no number is also an answer
The Generac GP2500i and iQ3500 pages publish watts, weight, and run time, and no dBA figure at all. The GP2500i page does not even list its outlets.
We are not going to guess what a Generac sounds like, and neither should you. But notice the pattern: noise is the spec this category is bought on, every competitor publishes something, and Generac publishes nothing on either unit. If the numbers were good, printing them would be free. Until Generac states a figure, we treat both units as unranked on noise, and we would not buy either for close-quarters camping on hope.
The quiet answer that is not a generator
