Working remotely from an RV comes down to four numbers: the upload speed your calls need, the latency they need, the watt-hours a work day costs, and how many independent connections you have when one dies. Get those right and the rest is logistics. Get them wrong and you find out during a meeting, which is the expensive way.
Upload is the number that breaks you
Most people check download speed, and download is rarely the problem. Video calls are roughly symmetric: you are sending a stream the whole time. Zoom’s published bandwidth requirements, checked July 18, 2026:
- One-on-one video: 600kbps up and down for high quality. 1.2Mbps for 720p. 3.8Mbps down and 3.0Mbps up for 1080p.
- Group video: 1.0Mbps down and 600kbps up for high quality. 2.6Mbps down and 1.8Mbps up for 720p. 3.8Mbps down and 3.0Mbps up for 1080p.
Those are smaller numbers than the marketing on any connection you will buy. That is the good news. The bad news is that a connection which streams a movie without trouble can still fail a call, because streaming buffers ahead and uses almost no upload, while a call has no buffer and uploads constantly. A weak cell signal usually loses upload first.
Two habits follow. Run your speed test and read the upload column. And when a site is marginal, drop to audio-only before the call rather than during it: you are down to a few hundred kbps, and nobody minds a camera being off nearly as much as they mind a frozen face.
Latency and jitter matter more than peak speed
A speed test measures how much data moved during a few seconds. A call needs packets to arrive steadily for 45 minutes. Those are different questions, and cellular in particular is good at answering the first one and failing the second.
The reason is congestion. Every major carrier reserves the right to slow certain customers when a cell site is busy, in their own words, and none of that shows up in a speed test you run at 9am on a quiet Tuesday. How cellular plans actually behave has the specific thresholds the carriers publish. The practical version: test at the hour you will actually be working. A tower that is empty at dawn can be saturated at 4pm when the nearest town gets home.
Satellite has the opposite pattern. It holds a steady connection or it does not, and when it drops it is usually because something is in the way rather than because the network got busy.
The power budget for a work day
Off-grid, working is a load like any other. Rough figures to plan against:
- Laptop: typically 30 to 60W in use, so 240 to 480Wh over 8 hours.
- Starlink Mini: 25 to 40W average per Starlink’s spec sheet, so 200 to 320Wh over 8 hours, and it runs on 12 to 48V DC without an inverter.
- Starlink Standard: 75 to 100W average, so 600 to 800Wh over 8 hours, and it ships with an AC power supply, so on batteries it runs through an inverter that takes its own cut.
- Cellular hotspot: single-digit watts. This is cellular’s quiet advantage and the reason it stays in the rig even after you buy a dish.
Add it up and a Standard-dish work day can approach 1.3kWh before you make coffee. A Mini plus a laptop is closer to 500 to 800Wh. Two cheap wins: charge the laptop during peak sun rather than after dark, and run the dish only during work hours. Leaving a Standard dish on overnight for no reason is the single most common way people flatten a bank.
Redundancy is the job, not the gear
If your income depends on being reachable at 10am, one connection is not a system. The standard setup is Starlink plus a cellular line, because their failure modes do not overlap: terrain and tower spacing kill cellular, tree canopy kills satellite, and neither one cares about the other’s problem.
That does not mean buying the most expensive of both. It means having a second path that works well enough for audio and email while you drive toward the first one. A prepaid line on a second carrier costs less than one lost client.
The habits do more than the hardware:
- Test before you unhitch. Park, deploy, run a speed test, check the obstruction map. Relocating is easy at 2pm and awful at 8am.
- Know your fallback town. Most boondocking sits within a reasonable drive of a library, a cafe, or a parking lot with 4 bars. Knowing which one, and how long the drive takes, beats discovering it mid-outage.
- Download before you leave pavement. Maps, documents, the repo, the files for tomorrow. The best backup is not needing the connection for an hour.
- Tell people your situation once. A colleague who knows you are on satellite forgives a dropped call. One who does not assumes you are flaky.
Where you park is a scheduling decision
Two things move you whether the internet is good or not.
Stay limits move you on a clock. BLM’s national camping page puts dispersed camping at generally 14 days within any 28-day period, with the specific limit set by the field office managing that land, and every national forest sets its own rule by forest order. For remote work that means the move is a known event, not a surprise, so put it on a Friday rather than the morning of a deadline, and scout the next site’s connectivity before you commit to it.
Coverage maps move you by lying to you, gently. The FCC’s National Broadband Map says outright that mobile coverage areas are generated by propagation modeling, that they describe outdoor or in-vehicle use and exclude indoor service, and that real-world experience varies with device, cell site capacity, and terrain. So the map showing 5G over your campsite is a model’s opinion about someone standing outside, not a measurement of your laptop inside an aluminum box. The honest version
Working from public land is very doable and less romantic than it looks. Some weeks the connection is better than the office. Some weeks you drive 40 minutes to a library because a storm parked over the ridge, or you take the 7am call from a gravel pullout because it is the only place with upload. The people who keep doing it are the ones who built slack into the schedule, not the ones who bought the biggest dish.
