Water is what sends most people back to town, not power. Solar and a decent battery will keep a fridge and a laptop going for a week without much thought. A fresh tank will not, because you can add another panel to a roof but you cannot add another 40 gallons to a trailer. Here is the math, worked from published numbers, and the habits that change the answer.
Start with the honest scale of the problem
At home, USGS puts typical indoor use at about 80 to 100 gallons per person per day. EPA reports the average American family uses more than 300 gallons a day, roughly 70 percent of it indoors.
Now put that against a tank. A 2027 Airstream Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk lists a 53 gallon fresh water tank. Two people living at 90 gallons each per day would empty it in under seven hours.
At the other end, EPA’s emergency drinking water planning guidance notes that suggested values for emergency supply range from 0.5 to 5 gallons per person per day depending on whether food preparation and hygiene are counted, and treats 1 gallon per person per day as a plausible planning number for drinking, food preparation, and health-related hygiene. That gallon is a survival floor. Nobody is enjoying it.
Boondocking lives in the gap between those, and where you land in that gap is almost entirely a shower decision.
The per-person-per-day math
Fixture flow rates are published, so we can build the number instead of guessing it.
Showers. The federal standard for showerheads is 2.5 gallons per minute, and an EPA WaterSense labeled head uses no more than 2.0 gpm. Your rig probably delivers less than that, because the pump is the real ceiling. The Pentair SHURflo Revolution 4008, a common RV fresh water pump, is rated at 3.0 gpm at open flow but 1.2 gpm at 40 psi, which is where the pressure switch restarts it, with shut-off at 55 psi. So a shower with the water running continuously pulls roughly 1.2 to 2 gallons a minute in practice.
Five minutes of that is 6 to 10 gallons. One shower.
Turn the water off while you soap, and the same shower runs the pump for about a minute: 1.2 to 2 gallons.
Sinks. The federal standard for a bathroom faucet is 2.2 gpm, and a WaterSense labeled faucet is 1.5 gpm, again pump-limited in practice. Two minutes of running tap for a round of dishes is roughly 2.5 to 4 gallons. A dishpan and a wiped plate is under 1.
Drinking and cooking. Call it the EPA planning figure of about 1 gallon per person per day and adjust up in heat.
Add those into two profiles:
- Frugal: 1 gallon drinking and cooking, a 2 gallon rinse-off shower every other day, 1 gallon for dishes and washing up. Roughly 3 gallons per person per day.
- Comfortable: 1 gallon drinking and cooking, a 6 gallon daily shower, 2 gallons for dishes and washing up. Roughly 9 gallons per person per day.
Both of those are our arithmetic from the sourced flow rates above, not a surveyed figure. We have not found an official measurement of what boondockers actually use, so we are not going to present one as fact. Run your own numbers on your first trip by noting the day the tank ran dry.
Now divide it into a real tank
Two adults, in a Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk at 53 gallons fresh:
- Frugal, 6 gallons a day total: about 8 days.
- Comfortable, 18 gallons a day total: about 3 days.
Same two people in a 2025 Jay Flight SLX 197MBW, which lists a 30 gallon fresh tank:
- Frugal: about 5 days.
- Comfortable: under 2 days.
That is the whole difference between “we should head back Thursday” and “we should head back tonight,” and it is decided by shower length, not by anything on your roof.
The grey tank is usually the real limit
Here is the part that catches people. Almost all the water you take out of the fresh tank arrives in the grey tank a minute later. The only water that does not is what you drink, cook into food, or carry off in a jug.
The Flying Cloud 30FB Bunk lists 53 gallons fresh and 40 gallons grey. Empty the fresh tank over a week and roughly 45 of those gallons head for a 40 gallon grey tank. Grey fills first, and it fills before your fresh tank is dry. Your trip length is set by the smaller number.
It does not go the same way in every rig. The Jay Flight SLX 197MBW lists 30 gallons fresh against 40 grey, so on that trailer fresh genuinely is the constraint. Look up your own model’s capacities rather than assuming which tank governs. Then plan your days out against whichever is smaller.
Black tanks last much longer than either, which is why waste planning and water planning are separate problems. The dumping side is in waste and dumping.
Weight, which nobody mentions until the soft road
A gallon of water at 70°F weighs 8.329 pounds (USGS). So:
- 53 gallons of fresh water: about 441 pounds.
- 30 gallons: about 250 pounds.
- A 40 gallon grey tank, full: about 333 pounds.
That is real cargo, and it stacks against your rig’s payload rating and your tires. It also decides whether a soft access road holds you. Fill for the trip you are taking. Arriving at a remote site with a full fresh tank and a full grey tank is the worst of both.
The habits that roughly double your days
None of these are clever. They just work.
Shower with the water off. Wet down, shut the valve, soap, rinse. This is the single biggest lever and it is worth 4 to 8 gallons a day for two people.
Catch the cold water. The water that runs while you wait for hot is clean. Put a jug under it and use it for dishes, the toilet, or the dog.
Wipe before washing. A paper towel on a greasy plate saves more water than any faucet aerator ever will.
Use a dishpan. A basin of water washes several days of dishes. A running tap washes one plate.
Separate your drinking water. Carry a few gallons in jugs, apart from the tank. It keeps drinking water independent of the plumbing, it gives you a reserve you cannot accidentally shower away, and it means a questionable fill does not contaminate everything.
Keep a paper log for one trip. Note the day each tank hits its limit. After one trip you will have a real number for your rig and your household, which is better than anything on this page.
Refilling, and the one rule about water quality
Fill from a source marked potable. At a dump station that means the separate labeled potable spigot, never the non-potable hose used to rinse the sewer connection. Our dump stations and fresh water guide covers where the reliable fill points are.
If you are ever working with water of unknown quality, EPA’s emergency disinfection guidance is the standard to follow: if the water is cloudy, let it settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter first, then bring it to a rolling boil for at least one minute, or three minutes at altitudes above 5,000 feet. Chemical treatment is 8 drops of 6 percent unscented household bleach, or 6 drops of 8.25 percent, per gallon. EPA also says not to use water with floating material, a dark color, or a questionable odor at all. Treat that as a fallback, not a plan.
