Five of Yellowstone’s ten campgrounds move to Recreation.gov starting the 2027 summer season, and the booking window drops from about 13 months to about 6. If you were planning to grab a 2027 site next month on Yellowstone National Park Lodges’ page, you can’t. The window has moved.
The change is announced by the concessioner, Yellowstone National Park Lodges, verified today. Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant, Madison, and Fishing Bridge RV Park all shift to Recreation.gov for 2027. The concessioner will keep running the campgrounds on the ground: only the reservation channel moves.
Which campgrounds and what changes
Yellowstone runs ten campgrounds. Five are already on Recreation.gov: Indian Creek, Lewis Lake, Mammoth, Slough Creek, and Tower Fall, per the Recreation.gov Yellowstone gateway and the NPS Yellowstone campgrounds page. The other five have been booked through Yellowstone National Park Lodges. Starting 2027, they all live in one place.
Three things actually change for you as a camper:
- The booking window shrinks. The concessioner’s current window is up to 13 months out, opening on the 5th of each month for the same month a year later. Recreation.gov’s window for 2027 will open “approximately 6 months in advance.” Snowbirds and planners who lock next summer’s route in fall lose about half a year of runway.
- You pick your site. Recreation.gov reservations at these campgrounds will be site-specific, not the current model where you reserve a spot and get assigned a site at check-in. That is a real improvement if you care which loop you’re on or need a pull-through.
- Two accounts collapse into one. You’ll book any Yellowstone campground through the same Recreation.gov login, on the same rules.
Why this matters more than it sounds
A 6-month rolling window at Recreation.gov is famously a scramble. Popular sites at other parks get taken in the first minute the window opens on a given day. For a Yellowstone-in-July trip that would have been a 13-month plan-ahead, the new reality is: know exactly which date and campground you want, be on the site at the release time, refresh. What has not changed and what we don’t know yet
The 2026 season still runs on the current channels. Yellowstone National Park Lodges continues to book Bridge Bay, Canyon, Grant, Madison, and Fishing Bridge for 2026 arrivals. The NPS Yellowstone campgrounds page still reflects the current split and does not yet mention the 2027 transition on its main content, so if you want the concessioner’s exact quote, use the source above. Fee schedules for 2027 are not published in the announcement, and the exact release time when the 6-month window opens each day for the moved campgrounds is not stated. Both will show up on Recreation.gov before the window opens.
Before you plan
If you’re planning a 2026 Yellowstone trip, nothing changes: book through the current channel now, no waiting. If you’re planning 2027 or later, stop trying to lock it 13 months out for these five campgrounds. Mark your calendar 6 months before your arrival date and be on Recreation.gov at the release time. And whatever else, the posted sign at the campground kiosk and the ranger on duty beat the website, especially on fire orders or closures that come up mid-season.
