If you camp at Shenandoah, next season’s booking won’t work the way it used to. The park hands its campgrounds to a private concessioner, ExplorUS, on January 1, 2027. Early 2027 reservations are frozen until early January, rates won’t be known until mid-December, and the half-price camping that Senior and Access Pass holders get today is not guaranteed under the new operator. We read the park’s pages on November 8, 2026.
What the park says
The campground reservations page, last updated October 29, says early 2027 reservations “are currently unavailable while the National Park Service transfers campground operations to our incoming concessioner, ExplorUS.” The park expects “to open reservations in early January” and will “announce additional details, including rates, in mid-December.” If spring dates look unavailable, that isn’t a sellout. Nothing has been released yet.
The park’s concessions FAQ fills in the rest. The contract runs 15 years, from January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2042, and covers Mathews Arm, Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain and Loft Mountain.
- Pass discounts. “Visitors with Access Passes and Senior Passes will get half-off their reservation at NPS-operated campgrounds. It is up to the concessioner to determine discount offers at concessions-operated campgrounds.”
- Rates. “Rates will be set by the concessioner,” under the market-comparison rule in 36 CFR 51.82, and the park says increases over the life of the contract are expected.
- Booking system. The park prefers Recreation.gov, “but it is not required.”
- Site types. The concessioner must keep both first-come and reservable sites.
- Seasons. The concessioner can ask to extend operating dates but “cannot shorten the season.”
- Hookups. Twenty-four sites at Mathews Arm will be electrified. The FAQ gives no date.
The catch
Nobody has published the 2027 terms yet. Not the price, not the pass policy, not the release schedule. Anything you read before mid-December about 2027 Shenandoah rates is a guess. The FAQ leaves the pass discount to ExplorUS, which means it could stay, shrink or go.
Closed season is also simple, and strict. The park says car camping or “boondocking” with an RV or any other vehicle is prohibited in Shenandoah, and that when campgrounds are closed, “car and RV campers must seek campsites outside the park.” Overlooks and picnic grounds are not a fallback. The posted sign and the park’s current word beat any website, ours included.
What is still open this year
The operating dates page, last updated November 2, lists Lewis Mountain through November 22, first-come only, and Big Meadows through November 29, reservation only. Mathews Arm and Loft Mountain closed November 1.
What to do
- Watch for mid-December. That’s when the park says rates and details arrive. If the Senior Pass discount matters to your budget, that announcement is the one to read.
- Book in January, not now. The park says early 2027 dates can’t be booked yet, and it hasn’t posted an exact opening day.
- Line up an outside-the-park option for late November through March. Our Virginia free camping page covers the national forest land nearby. For how this park and its neighbors closed out 2026, see our fall closing dates piece.
