Grand Canyon's North Rim campground is open again, and there is no drinking water on the North Rim

The North Rim Campground at Grand Canyon reopened on June 1, 2026 and is taking reservations through October 15, but there is no drinking water anywhere on the North Rim. Every drop you use up there is a drop you carried in. That single fact decides how long your stay can be, not the campground’s booking window.

The National Park Service put it plainly in its May 21, 2026 release on the reopening after the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire: “Potable water will not be available anywhere on the North Rim during the 2026 season, including at the North Kaibab Trailhead and Supai Tunnel. Visitors must bring all drinking water needed for their visit and hikes.” The park’s North Rim status page says the campground has neither water nor RV hookups, and that campers bring their own or buy it from the general store next door. The fire rules are different from the South Rim

Stage 2 fire restrictions apply on the North Rim, and the park says they hold for the whole 2026 season. Campfires, charcoal grills and outdoor smoking are out, except inside an enclosed vehicle. Camp stoves and lanterns burning liquid petroleum or LPG are allowed in an area cleared of flammable material.

The South Rim is not the same. The park lifted Stage 2 there at 8 a.m. on July 19, 2026 after the monsoon arrived, dropping to Stage 1, which allows a campfire in a designated fire ring inside a maintained campground. The parts that catch people

There is no lodging inside the park on the North Rim this season, so the campground and Cottonwood Campground, which reopened May 15 for North Kaibab hikers, are the only in-park beds.

The two official pages disagree on the general store’s season. The status page gives May 15 to October 15; the May 21 release says the store runs daily 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through September 7. We are not going to guess which is current. Do not build a trip around buying water there.

The gas station is listed as 24-hour, pay at the pump, unleaded and diesel. Fuel is the one thing you can count on getting.

What this means for your stay

Your water tank is now your stay limit. A rig with a 40 gallon fresh tank and no refill option is on a much shorter leash than the October 15 reservation window suggests, and there is no dump-and-fill loop to run without leaving the rim. Work out your daily use before you book, and book the shorter trip.

If the answer is that hauling water for a week does not pencil out, camp outside the park instead and drive in. Our Arizona free camping page covers the public land in the state and who manages it, and dispersed camping inside a national park is almost never allowed, so that is not the workaround.
