If Death Valley is on your fall route, Titus Canyon Road closes on October 1, 2026 and does not reopen until September 30, 2027. That is the park’s own wording on its conditions page, checked August 24, 2026: the road “will be closed for the second phase of repairs October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027.” Until then it is temporarily open after initial repairs and may close on occasional days.
A full year is not a maintenance window. Plan the winter without it.
The rest of the backcountry road list
The same page, with a road status timestamp of August 13, 2026, has more closed than most people expect after three years of flood recovery.
Darwin Falls Road is “completely gone in many places” and likely stays closed until summer 2027. You can park on the shoulder of CA-190 and walk in. West Side Road is closed north of the Warm Springs Road junction because of mud and repeated stuck vehicles, so there is no vehicle access to Galena, Johnson, Hanaupah or Trail Canyon. Hunter Mountain Road is closed for the same reason. The final 3 miles of Phinney Canyon Road are washed out and impassable to all vehicles. Bonnie Clare Road and Scotty’s Castle remain closed with no reopening date, and that one bars pedestrians too.
One rig-size note that catches people towing: Lower Wildrose Road, the Trona to Wildrose connector, does not allow vehicles longer than 25 feet.
What is open to camp in
Furnace Creek, Mesquite Spring, Wildrose (no water), Thorndike, Mahogany Flat, Eureka Dunes, Saline Valley and Homestake are listed open. Emigrant Campground and its restrooms are closed indefinitely for water system repairs. Texas Springs, Stovepipe Wells and Sunset sit under a seasonal closure.
We are not going to tell you when those three reopen. The park’s developed campgrounds page renders its per-campground table through a script that did not load for us, so the reopening dates and the nightly rates are not something we read. Call 760-786-3200 rather than trust a number we did not see.
What that page does say in plain text, as of its January 9, 2026 update: Furnace Creek reservations cover the camping season of October 15 to April 15, bookable through recreation.gov at least 2 days out and up to 6 months out, and in recent years it books to capacity most days. It has only 18 full hookup sites, with both 30 and 50 amp service at each plus water and sewer, and the park says those are often booked 6 months in advance. Do not plug an EV into those pedestals. The park says you could be liable for the damage.
Dump stations are in the Furnace Creek area and at Stovepipe Wells and Mesquite Spring campgrounds. Entry is $30 per private vehicle for 7 days, or $55 for the park annual pass, per the fees page checked August 24, 2026. The park does not take cash.
What to do now
If you were building a Death Valley week around Titus Canyon, move it to September or drop it. If you want Furnace Creek in the high season, the 6-month window means late winter dates are open to book today.
