Best Solar Kit for RV Use: Roof Kits, Portable Panels, and One Full System

Five ways to put solar on an RV, from a $185 roof starter kit to a $720-1000 complete system. Why the cheap kits are PWM, what that costs you, and which panels only make sense with a power station.

For a roof install, buy the Renogy 400W kit ($450-620): 400W is the size where solar covers a fridge and daily use, and the panels carry a 10-year warranty. If you are starting from zero with no battery or inverter either, the BougeRV system ($720-1000) is one box instead of four purchases. Scores weigh published specs, warranty, and price.         These five are not the same product

        "Solar kit" covers three different purchases here, and the prices only make sense once you separate them. The two Renogy kits are roof hardware: panels, a charge controller, brackets, and cables, with no battery and no inverter. The Jackery and EcoFlow are portable folding panels with no controller at all; they are built to plug into a power station and use its charging electronics. And the BougeRV is a complete system: panel, MPPT controller, a 100Ah lithium battery, and a 1,000W pure sine inverter in one order.

        That is why comparing the BougeRV's $720-1000 against the Renogy 200W kit's $185-230 is meaningless. The BougeRV includes the battery and inverter, which is most of a system's cost. Priced as a whole first setup, it is fair. Priced as a "solar kit" against panel-only boxes, it looks expensive for 200W, and that comparison is wrong.

        Kit or components?

        A kit's case is convenience: the parts are matched, the connectors fit, and one order covers the roof side of the job. For a first install on a small rig, that is worth real money in avoided mistakes.

        The case for buying components is control. You pick the controller (see the next section), you size the wire runs for your roof, and you leave room to grow. The controller is the part that stings later: a 30A unit bought in a 200W kit becomes the bottleneck the day you add panels. If you already know you will expand, price out components before defaulting to a kit.

        PWM vs MPPT: what the cheap kits cost you

        Both Renogy starter kits ship with a Wanderer 30A PWM controller. PWM works by pulling the panel down to battery voltage and discarding the rest of the panel's output; MPPT converts that extra voltage into charge current instead. On a 12V system the difference commonly runs 10 to 30 percent of harvest, and it widens in cold weather, when panel voltage rises.

        On the 200W kit, PWM is a defensible trade: the kit is the cheapest path to real roof solar, and an MPPT version costs more. On the 400W kit it is harder to excuse. Losing 10 to 30 percent of a 400W array is 40 to 120 watts you paid for and do not harvest. Renogy sells MPPT variants at a higher price; do that math before checkout.

        One more honest note on the 400W kit: the spec table on Renogy's own product page displays the wrong product entirely, so per-panel electrical specs are unverified. The kit-level facts here (panel count, controller, warranty) come from the rest of the page, but we could not confirm per-panel voltage and current figures from the manufacturer.

        Portable panels are power station accessories

        The Jackery SolarSaga 200W and EcoFlow NextGen 220W ship without a charge controller on purpose: they feed a power station's built-in MPPT input. Paired that way, the architecture is right, and the panels are well sealed at IP68. Trying to charge a standalone 12V battery bank with them means adding your own controller, at which point a rigid panel is cheaper per watt.

        Between the two, the Jackery has the longer warranty (3 + 2 years against EcoFlow's 12 months) and built-in USB ports that charge a phone with nothing else in the loop. Ignore both list prices: the Jackery's $699 list was $379 the day we checked, and EcoFlow's own pages showed $399 and $279 at two different URLs, both pre-order. Judge them at street price, and confirm what you are actually paying for the EcoFlow before you order.

        Who should buy what

        A roof install for a rig you live or travel in regularly: the Renogy 400W kit, with the MPPT upgrade if the budget allows. It is the size where a 12V fridge stops being a rationing decision.

        Starting from nothing, no battery, no inverter, no strong opinions: the BougeRV system. It is the only complete package here, the controller is MPPT with a low-temp charging cutoff, and the pure sine inverter means household plugs work on day one. Its weak spot is proportion: 200W of panel is small for a 100Ah battery, so a heavy night of use takes a full sunny day to recover.         Already own a power station: the Jackery, mostly on warranty. If you are deep in the EcoFlow ecosystem the 220W bifacial fits, but you accept the group's shortest warranty to get it. Either way you are shopping for a power station accessory, not an RV electrical system.

        What we would skip

        The Renogy 200W kit is only the right buy if your loads are genuinely light: lights, fans, and devices, no fridge. Through a PWM controller, 200W of panel yields something like 600 to 800Wh on a good summer day and much less in winter, and there is no headroom. Most people who start at 200W add panels within a year, and then the 30A PWM controller becomes the next purchase. If a fridge is in your plans, start at 400W, or run your loads through the solar calculator and let the number decide.

        How much solar do I need for my RV?

        Match the array to your daily draw. A 12V fridge, lights, fans, and device charging typically use 500 to 900Wh a day, and a rooftop watt yields roughly 4 to 5Wh a day in decent summer sun, less through a PWM controller or in winter.         Is a solar kit better than buying components separately?

        A kit is the easier first buy: the panels, controller, brackets, and cables are matched, and one order covers the roof side. Buying components costs more effort but lets you pick an MPPT controller instead of the PWM unit the cheap kits bundle, and lets you size each part to your plans. If you expect to expand the array later, component buying avoids replacing a controller you just paid for.

        What is the difference between PWM and MPPT charge controllers?

        An MPPT controller converts the panel's full output voltage into charge current; a PWM controller drags the panel down to battery voltage and wastes the difference.         Can I use a portable solar panel instead of roof panels?

To charge a standalone 12V battery bank you would need to add your own controller. Portables let you park in shade and put the panel in sun, but they need setup every stop and can walk off while you are away from camp.
