How to Build a Car Sleeping Platform: Materials, Dimensions, and Mistakes

A flat deck over your folded rear seats, built in a weekend from one sheet of plywood and some 2x3. Real dimensions, the headroom it costs you, and the ways these builds fail.

A car sleeping platform is a flat deck built over your folded rear seats, so you get a level bed on top and storage underneath. You can build a decent one in a weekend from one sheet of plywood, a few lengths of 2x3, and a box of deck screws. What follows is what those parts actually measure, how much headroom the build takes from you, and the four ways these platforms fail.

The problem you are actually solving

Fold your rear seats down and look at what you have. It is not flat. Most seat backs sit an inch or two proud of the cargo floor and slope toward the front of the car, there is usually a hard step or gap where the seat back meets the floor, and the wheel wells pinch the usable width in the middle. Sleeping directly on that means sliding downhill all night with a bar under your hip.

A platform ignores all of it. You build a rigid plane at the height of the highest obstruction, support it in a few places, and everything below it becomes storage instead of a problem.

Measure your own car first, and do not use a number off the internet

We are not publishing cargo dimensions for any specific vehicle, and you should distrust any site that does. Interior dimensions change with model year, trim, seat option, and whether the car has a spare tire or a subwoofer under the floor. The only reliable numbers are the ones you take yourself.

Take six measurements, with the seats folded into the exact position you plan to sleep in:

  1. Length, floor to the back of the front seats, at deck height rather than at the floor.
  2. Narrowest width, which is almost always between the wheel wells.
  3. Widest width, usually at the very back near the hatch.
  4. Height from your intended deck height to the headliner. This is the sitting-up number.
  5. The hatch or tailgate opening, both height and width, because the deck has to go in through it.
  6. The height difference between the folded seat back and the cargo floor, which sets your minimum frame height.

Write them on the sheet of plywood in pencil before you cut anything.

What the materials actually measure

Lumber is smaller than its name. A 2x4 is 1.5 by 3.5 inches, a 2x3 is 1.5 by 2.5, a 2x2 is 1.5 by 1.5, and a 1x4 is 0.75 by 3.5. Design with the real numbers or your deck will sit lower than you planned and your legs will be short.

Plywood is the same story in miniature. Sheets are sold by nominal thickness and usually run slightly under: 3/4 inch is commonly 23/32, and 1/2 inch is commonly 15/32. That 1/32 does not matter for a flat deck. It matters a lot if you cut a dado or a slot for a drawer runner.

Foam toppers are commonly sold in 2 and 3 inch thicknesses. Two inches of soft topper foam over plywood is not enough if you sleep on your side: your hip will bottom out on the deck and you will feel it at 3am. Three inches of firmer foam, or a self-inflating pad rated for the temperatures you camp in, is the better default. If you want to compare pads rather than cut foam, start with sleeping pads.

The headroom math, which is the whole design

Every inch of platform is an inch you cannot sit up in. Add the stack honestly:

  • 2x3 frame on edge: 2.5 inches
  • 3/4 inch plywood deck: about 0.73 inches
  • 3 inch foam: 3 inches
  • Total: about 6.25 inches

Lay the same 2x3 flat instead of on edge and the stack drops to about 5.25 inches, but you have given up nearly all the storage depth that was the reason to build a platform. Go to 2x4 on edge and you are at about 7.25 inches with real storage under it.

Now subtract that from measurement 4 above. If what is left is less than the distance from your seat bones to the top of your head, you cannot sit up in your car anymore. That is not a reason to skip the build. It is a reason to know it before you cut, and to think about whether you want a half-width deck with a footwell you can sit in instead.

Framing and support spacing

The deck needs support often enough that it does not flex when you roll over. A working rule of thumb: a crossmember at least every 24 inches under 3/4 inch plywood, every 16 inches under 1/2 inch. Build it, then stand on it in the middle of the longest unsupported span and feel what it does. If it moves, add a member. This is a judgment call rather than a published span table, and your own weight is the only test that matters.

Legs want to land on structure, not on trim. The cargo floor pan and the factory tie-down anchors are structure. Molded plastic side trim and the thin plastic over a spare tire well are not, and a 2x2 leg with a person on the deck above it will punch straight through them. Where a leg has to sit on something questionable, put a wide foot on it (a scrap of plywood 4 inches square) to spread the load.

Put weatherstrip tape or adhesive felt anywhere wood touches metal or glass. A platform that rattles over every seam in the road will drive you out of the car before the cold does.

The four ways these builds fail

Hinged sections sag. A folding deck is genuinely useful, but a piano hinge at midspan with nothing under it will droop under your hip within a season. Put a leg or a cleat directly beneath every hinge line, or accept the sag.

Legs fall over when you move. A leg that is only screwed at the top pivots. Brace each one to the frame with a diagonal, or use two legs joined into a U so the pair cannot fold sideways.

Nothing is restrained. A plywood deck loose in the back and a stack of full bins behind the front seats are mass with nowhere to go in a crash. Strap the deck to the factory cargo tie-downs. Keep heavy things low and forward.

The build fights the tailgate. Measure the opening before you cut a one-piece deck. A deck that fits the cargo bay but not the hatch has to be cut in half in the driveway, which is how a lot of two-piece platforms come to exist.

After it is built

Two things kill more comfortable nights than a bad deck. The first is condensation, because a level bed does nothing about the water you breathe out onto cold glass all night: see how to stop condensation in a car. The second is light and sightlines, which is what window covers are for.

One safety point belongs here rather than there. Do not run the engine to stay warm with the platform loaded and the windows shut. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which OSHA describes as a poisonous, colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that displaces oxygen in the blood, and which can overcome you in minutes without warning. Then there is the question of where you park the finished thing. That is a separate problem with its own answer, and it is local: see where it is legal to sleep in your car. Wherever you end up, the posted sign and whoever manages that lot beat anything this site tells you.

Frequently asked questions

What plywood thickness should a car sleeping platform be?

Three-quarter inch plywood if your crossmembers are 24 inches apart, half inch if they are 16 inches apart or closer. Both work. The thinner sheet saves roughly 40 percent of the weight and costs you support spacing. Note that plywood is sold by nominal thickness and usually measures under it: a sheet sold as 3/4 inch commonly measures 23/32, and 1/2 inch commonly measures 15/32. Measure your actual sheet before cutting any joint that has to fit.

How much headroom does a sleeping platform cost you?

Add up the stack. A 2x3 frame laid on edge is 2.5 inches, the plywood deck is about 0.73 inches, and a 3 inch foam topper is 3 inches, so you lose about 6.25 inches of sitting-up room. Laying the same 2x3 flat instead of on edge drops that to about 5.25 inches but cuts your under-deck storage to almost nothing. Measure from your folded seat to the headliner before you commit, because that number is the whole design constraint.

Should the platform be full width or half width?

Full width gives you a real bed and takes away everything else. You cannot sit up on it, you cannot reach gear without crawling, and getting in means going head first through the hatch. Half width leaves a footwell and an aisle, and most people who build both end up keeping the half. Build full width only if the vehicle is tall enough that you can sit on the deck without your head touching, which you can only know by measuring your own car.

Does a sleeping platform need to be bolted down?

Strap it. A loose deck and a stack of heavy bins are unrestrained mass in a crash and in a hard stop. Run cam straps or bolts to the factory cargo tie-down points, which are anchored to structure rather than to trim. Keep heavy items low and forward, not stacked at head height behind the front seats.
