The number most people carry around is off by 9 degrees. Victron rates its LiFePO4 Smart batteries to charge between 5C and 50C, which is 41F to 122F. Not below freezing. 41F.
From Victron’s Lithium Battery Smart technical data, checked August 4, 2026:
- Charge: +5C to +50C, or 41F to 122F.
- Discharge: -20C to +50C, or -4F to 122F.
Section 4.7.3 of the same manual covers the setting that enforces it, the Allowed-To-Charge minimum temperature. The default is 5C. It is adjustable from -20C to +20C, and Victron attaches two warnings to that adjustment: “A lithium battery cell will sustain permanent damage when charged at temperatures below 5C,” and “Setting this temperature below 5C will void the warranty.”
So on a Victron bank the practical floor is 41F. Park at 8,000 feet in October, wake to a 36F morning, and the sun will be on your panels well before the battery will take what they produce. That is the BMS working, not failing.
Cold costs you capacity too, and that number is bigger
The datasheet rates nominal capacity at three temperatures. Take the 12.8V 100Ah model:
- 100Ah at 25C (77F)
- 80Ah at 0C (32F)
- 50Ah at -20C (-4F)
At freezing you have 80 percent of the capacity you paid for. At -4F you have half. The rest of the line scales the same way: the 330Ah is rated 260Ah at freezing and 160Ah at -4F.
That part is not damage. It is chemistry, and the capacity comes back when the battery warms. But it means a bank you sized on a July load calculation is not the bank you have in Colorado in November. Rerun it at the temperature you will actually camp in. The solar calculator works from daily watt-hours, and in the cold it is the watt-hour side of the sheet that has to shrink.
What this does not tell you
These are Victron’s published specs for Victron’s batteries. Other manufacturers publish different thresholds, and some ship a battery with an internal heater, which changes the answer completely. We have not verified anyone else’s numbers, so we are not going to state them. Read the datasheet for the battery you own.
One more thing that trips people: the specification is a battery temperature, not an air temperature. A bank inside a heated cabinet or under a bed above a warm floor sits above ambient. A bank in an unheated trailer bay does not, and it also lags. It stays cold into the morning after the air has warmed up.
Three honest options
Put the bank somewhere heated. Buy a battery with a heater built in. Or accept a later charging window and plan around it, which costs nothing and works more often than people expect, because on a clear cold day the panels produce for hours after the battery finally comes up to temperature.
Whichever you choose, leave the Allowed-To-Charge minimum where the factory set it. It is the only thing standing between a cold morning and permanent capacity loss.
