BLM published the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument’s fall and winter schedule on August 24, 2026, and four dates in it are worth writing down. Judith Landing Campground closes Thursday, October 15. Coal Banks Landing and James Kipp stay open until Tuesday, December 1. The Left Coulee access gate leading to the Bullwhacker area closes November 30. And on September 16 the seasonal motorized boating restrictions come off, so motorized boats can run both directions on all 149 miles of the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River until June 14.
That is more calendar than most BLM units publish. Usually the fall gate date is something you learn by driving to it.
The rest of the schedule
Starting September 7 the Missouri Breaks Interpretive Center moves to Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed weekends and all federal holidays through fall and winter. That is not a footnote. The center is the trip-planning phone number the announcement gives, 406-622-4000. If you plan on a Saturday phone call in November, you are not getting one.
The part the announcement does not date
“Roads within the monument are subject to seasonal closures.” That sentence carries no list and no dates. It sends you to the printed transportation map, sold at the Lewistown, Havre and Fort Benton BLM offices, or to the interactive map on the monument’s page.
So the campground you are aiming at has a published closing date and the road you would take to reach it does not. The monument’s own visit page is plain about what that road is: “Some of the roads are not suitable for low-clearance vehicles, and many roads cross soils that become absolutely impassable when wet.” Off-road driving is prohibited anywhere in the monument, so there is no legal way around a soft two-track. The visit page lists no fee.
Camping does not stop when the campgrounds do
BLM names dispersed camping, hunting, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing among what people do here in fall and winter. What governs how long you sit still is not the campground calendar, it is the Montana-Dakotas supplementary rule: 16 days in any 30, then move at least half a mile. What to do
If Judith Landing was the plan for after October 15, it is Coal Banks Landing or James Kipp instead, and those two run out on December 1. If you are hunting, the announcement asks you to know the road closures before you go, and the only ways to do that are the transportation map or a call to the interpretive center at 406-622-4000 while it is still open on weekdays.
