A phone bought in the last few years can send a text with no cell signal at all, over satellite, usually at no extra charge. What it sends is text. Not photos, not maps, not a phone call, and on Verizon’s satellite path, not the emergency alerts you would want during a fire. Every figure below comes from each company’s own published pages, read on 2026-08-17. We did not measure any of it.
What each one says it does
Apple. Emergency SOS via satellite runs on “iPhone 14 or later (all models)” and is “free for two years after the activation of an iPhone 14 or later (all models).” The requirement is blunt: “To connect to a satellite, you need to be outside with a clear view of the sky and horizon.” Apple also ships a Satellite Connection demo, which is the single most useful thing on this page. Run it in your driveway.
Verizon. Satellite messaging over Skylo, on the Galaxy S25 series, Z Fold7, Z Flip7 and Pixel 9 and 10 phones, with “no extra fee.” The limits are where the value is: “Multimedia Messaging (MMS), Rich Communication Services (RCS), and attachments aren’t supported,” Google Messages has to be your default messaging app, and “line of sight to satellite is required to connect.”
T-Mobile. T-Satellite covers texting, location sharing and some satellite-ready apps, included on certain plans and $10 a month per line otherwise. T-Mobile’s own caveat: “Data speeds are limited and may not support all apps.”
The part nobody advertises
Verizon’s support page states that “Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) or Commercial Mobile Alert System alerts aren’t supported over Skylo.”
WEA is how an evacuation order or a flash flood warning reaches a phone without anybody having your number. If you are parked on public land in August with satellite and no cell service, that channel is not reaching you. Satellite texting does not change the old rule: check conditions before you lose signal, not after.
How thin is the pipe? Thin enough that the Park Service built for it. The NPS App now has a low-data satellite mode, because “cell-to satellite connections may limit which apps, features, and websites users can access to conserve bandwidth.” In that mode, users “can enjoy maps, safety alerts in the low-data version without downloading individual park units” (nps.gov, updated May 21, 2026).
Where it stops being enough
Gates of the Arctic puts it plainly: “Cell phones do not work in the Park and Preserve.” That park recommends a satellite phone or a personal locator beacon, and it is honest about the tradeoff, noting that “one disadvantage of PLBs is they provide no means of communicating what the exact emergency is (broken leg, hypothermia, bear-mauling, etc.).”
Phone-to-satellite texting fixes that specific gap, since you can describe the problem. What it does not fix is battery, weather, tree cover or a canyon wall, all of which take away the clear view of the sky every one of these services requires.
What to do before the next trip
Run the demo so you have used it once. Download offline maps while you still have data. Tell someone your route and your check-in day, because a text you can send is worth nothing if nobody is expecting one. And keep a beacon as separate gear rather than something your phone replaced.
