Two developed BLM campgrounds in northern Nevada closed this week, both to fire, and neither closure order carries a reopening date. If your fall route crosses the state on I-80, check before you turn off toward either one.
The Winnemucca District went first. Its August 25 announcement says the BLM issued a temporary emergency closure order for the Water Canyon Recreation Area because of Juniper Ridge Fire activity, with the fire burning west of Golconda and east of Winnemucca in Humboldt County. The closure covers all BLM-administered lands in the recreation area, and the announcement names what that includes: the campground along Water Canyon Road, the hiking trails, and the disc golf course. It is effective immediately.
The Elko District followed a day later. Its August 26 announcement closed the Tabor Creek Recreation Area Campground and BLM Road 1275 in response to increased fire activity from the Forleen Fire. The closed stretch of road starts at the junction of BLM Road 1275 and County Road 753, the O’Neil-Deeth Road. Tabor Creek sits 58 miles northeast of Elko and offers 12 campsites and vault toilets. ”Temporary” is not a date
Read both announcements for an end date and you will not find one. Winnemucca says the closures “will remain in place until conditions improve and safe access can be re-established.” Elko just says temporary.
That is the correct way to write a fire closure and it is also the reason you cannot plan around one. A fire closure ends when the district decides it ends, which can be next week or after the first real snow. Anyone who tells you a reopening date for either of these is making it up.
What this actually costs you
The teeth are real on the Winnemucca side. That announcement states that violations may lead to prosecution before a United States Magistrate, fines under 18 U.S.C. 3571, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, and that vehicles found in violation may also be removed. Towed out of a fire closure in Humboldt County is an expensive weekend.
The quieter problem is that these two orders live in two different places. Winnemucca posted one, Elko posted the other, and there is no statewide BLM Nevada map that lights up when a district signs a closure. If you check one district page and drive, you have checked one district.
Before you turn off the interstate
Call. The Winnemucca announcement gives the Humboldt River Field Office at (775) 623-1500, and the Elko announcement gives the BLM Wells Field Office at 775-753-0200 during business hours. Both announcements also link a signed closure order and a map, which is where the actual boundary lives.
Then look at the gate. A posted closure sign and whatever the district tells you on the phone beat any website, this one included, and a fire closure moves faster than a page gets updated.
