If you have an overnight BWCAW permit for this week, it is cancelled. Superior National Forest closed the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to overnight paddle, motor, and hiking permits at all 103 quota entry points through Wednesday, July 29, 2026, after a lightning storm ignited a run of wildfires across the forest.
The current alert lives on the Recreation.gov permit page for the BWCAW Overnight Reservation and was still active when we checked it on 2026-07-27: recreation.gov/permits/233396. It is the number one thing to open before you leave home.
What the closure covers
Every point-of-entry overnight permit is cancelled through July 29. That is the Overnight Paddle, Overnight Motor, and Overnight Hiking categories, at all quota entries, not a subset. The wilderness itself is closed to overnight camping during that window.
Day use is a different story, and the split is narrow. Superior National Forest opened restricted day-use permits at select Cook County entry points on Monday, July 27. Day use at all other entries stays closed until the Forest Service says otherwise.
What Phase 2 looks like
The Forest Service laid out a proposed Phase 2 that would begin Thursday, July 30. In that plan, overnight access reopens at 37 of the 103 quota entry points and about 39 percent of the BWCAW returns to the public, drawn from the Gunflint, Kawishiwi, Tofte, and LaCroix ranger districts. A formal announcement was scheduled for July 27.
Two things about that plan. First, it is a proposal until the Forest Service posts the order. The last 24 hours of fire behavior can turn 37 entries into 20 or push the start into August. Second, “overnight” does not mean your original permit is honored: if your entry point is in the reopened set, you can go, but conditions on the ground still decide the trip. The current permit alert on Recreation.gov is the last word. The posted sign at the ranger station and the Forest Service’s live guidance beat any secondary account of it, including this one.
What to actually do this week
If your permit is inside the July 14 to July 29 window, refund or reschedule through Recreation.gov, then wait for the July 27 Phase 2 announcement before you rebook. If your permit is for after July 30, watch the Recreation.gov alert for the two or three days before you leave. If it goes silent or the closure list gets longer, do not drive north on hope.
If you were already committed to a Minnesota canoe trip and want to salvage it, Superior National Forest has developed and rustic campgrounds outside the wilderness that are unaffected by the wilderness closure. State parks in northeast Minnesota are also an option; the rules and permits are different from BWCAW, so read the state park page, not this one, before you go. Fire restrictions are in effect forest-wide. Even inside the reopened Phase 2 area, campfires may be prohibited outside a designated grate. That is a separate rule from the closure order, and it is set by the Forest Service, not by your permit. Bring a stove.
